Natural remedy for ADHD: you are your own healer!

The start of the way of looking different at ADD/ADHD is not necessarily dive into ‘Positive Thinking’ and sing and shouts Hallelujah. This may be the outcome at last, but that is not for now. What I can give, is to tell you first that I am diagnosed ADHD on the age of 37. After my second divorce, I visit a psychologist with the question: “I know what the women did wrong in my life, but now I want to research my contribution to the cause.”

Diagnose and further.

It is there, that a psychiatrist claims the diagnose ADHD. I go to use Ritalin and it helps me great. On the other hand, I do what many companions do: surfing on the Internet to find out all there is to find. There I discover a great book with an alternative vision: Thom Hartmann's “Complete Guide to ADHD: Help for Your Family at Home, School and Work”. What I learned of this work is to watch in another direction than the traditional and medical, pathological.

Disorder is a different. order.

He gives also a start with viewing at the benefits of the ‘disorder.He even substantiates the theory that ADD/ADHD is a different order and not necessarily and definitive a disorder. His clear approach in labelling the ADHD as a human type and the connection with the over-organised society we live in inspired many people. ‘Common’ people, but also other writers who give their own light at the same base of view. “Right skills for the wrong time,” as Michael Popkin says about Thom Hartmann’s theory, in the foreword of another book of Hartmann: “ADHD Secrets of Success.”

A "must".

If you are really serious in discovering the position of ADHD in society and mind, then the work of Thom Hartmann is a must. The beautiful aspect of his work is – I admire him really in this – that he begins his explaining down to earth. Subsequently, step-by-step, he takes the reader to a vision with which he helped a very lot of people. People labelled as ADD/ADHD and the people in the surrounding.

Great example.

There is one example I still remember now, out of my head. Somewhere in his book, Hartmann tells about a train trip he makes in India. He comes to talk with an Indian man, who seems to be important. Thom tells about his occupation with ADHD and asks the man how that is called in India. The answer of this Indian, after some moments of silence: “We don’t know these pathology, we call these people enlightened”… Isn’t it great?

"Explorer" concept.

In time, we talk about 1997/1998. It is then that his vision is a hype. I remember there are then many websites about “The Explorer”-concept. Many of these sites are gone by now, I don’t know the cause. One of the concepts that took me in is an intuitive insight that touches me still now. It is this: as labelled ADD/ADD-human, we know from very young that we are different. If we don’t know it by ourselves, then the people around will let us know. On one hand, we know and feel that this is right. On the other hand do we know that in core there is nothing wrong.

What is different?

We think the same (a lot more and often deeper, but a la), we feel the same, but it is something else that makes us different. That ‘something else’ is hard to define and it takes often a lot of suffering before we discovered the how and why of this.

Troubles and suffering.

This brings me to another subject: the trouble that joins. In my view is the trouble from the ‘disorder’ in itself not as devastating as the trouble from the consequences. I do see this in my own life, but also in that of a lot others. The fact that we heard from very young that we are different, annoying, unpleasant, troublesome, difficult has a very huge impact. To discover that this ‘different’ and so on doesn’t need to be bad takes a very, very long time and effort. One of the aims of this website is, to take care for this.

Step by step.

I realize very well that this takes steps and doesn’t come from one day to another. The fact that you read this is a very helpful step for you.
